Village Life

Last week, Joe and I took our Sunday lunch at the Swan Inn in the village of Kingston Saint Mary. As I was waiting for Joe to bring our pints of beer from the bar, I saw an entry form for the upcoming village flower show. I flipped through the booklet and stopped in my tracks when I read that Category 84 was for the heaviest slug. I fell in love with that flower show right then and there.

When Joe returned to our table with the beer, I told him our plans for the following Saturday were set. We would be back to take in the Kingston Saint Mary flower show.

On the drive to the village yesterday I was crossing my fingers hoping that someone had entered Category 84.

The village hall was filled with people. Everyone was in a festive mood. Many people had entered their flowers, their fruits and vegetables, their preserves, their baking and their artwork into the competition.

And then I saw it. It was sitting in a yellow margarine container on the corner of the stage. It was the winner of the heaviest slug category! I'm sure little Harry Way was pleased his slug had won first prize!

Every English outing ends one of two ways for us. We either have a pint of beer in an rustic old inn, or we have cream tea in a quaint tea room. Today the flower show ended with the latter in the back of the village hall.

Village life. I love it.

  1. OMG! It is a day later and I just realized I didn't put the lid back on the margarine container after I'd taken a photo! I hope the slug didn't escape.

  2. I think our Squamish slugs could win that category any day.

    1. I told that to the organizers! They couldn't believe my description of our coastal slugs! They were aghast when I told them about banana slugs!

  3. I love how symmetrical the lay out is for each vegetable presentation. It is like an art show. Shu

    1. It was so cute in that village hall, Shuna! It was a throw back to the 1940s.
